Many of us have witnessed it. It is that old man sitting on his porch, banging his cane, and shouting, “This world is going to hell in a handbasket!” or some other similiar phrase. Yes, he is the consummate doomsayer. Still, despite his negative there is some truth to all of this.
If you read or hear the news anywhere, whether it be, newspaper, internet, blogs, articles, or news stations, all of these mediums will generally have one thing in common. Do you know what it is? NEGATIVITY!
Oh, we’ve got the negative news bug as a nation bad. Wars in foreign countries, economic recessions, political mudslinging and broken promises, questions about the education system and so on and so on. We are familiar with it all. And so, in the middle of all of this swirling around, I stood back for a moment, took a deep breath, and I thought – “Is there anything good that we can find today? Anything to give us hope? Anything to make us feel alive and teach us what it means to live a joyful and radiant life?
And so friends, I think I have found it. Some good news for a change. See, I stepped back and I thought, what would you folks want to hear from me? How could I encourage your hearts? And I remembered a little book in the New Testament that meant so much to me a few years ago, when I was just beginning my own personal faith journey.
It’s called the book of Philippians. It’s only four short chapters, but man do these things pack a wallop. I mean there are some heavy topics in these words. Weighty words of significance. But encouraging, life-giving good words for us all.
So throughout this next series, beginning today, we are going to be taking a look at Some Good News For a Change. And we’ll be walking through several passages in the book of Philippians together. Sound like fun?
